GERT & UWE TOBIAS
"ZURÜCK NACH VORWÄRTS ZU"
Curator: Gerald Matt, Angela Stief
KUNSTHALLE wien project space,
April 08th - June 28th, 2009
The works of the artist duo Gert & Uwe Tobias, born in Transylvania in 1973, relate to European folklore, Russian Constructivism, and Art Brut. Combining abstract geometric elements of style and humorous or uncanny atmospheres, the artists create pictorial agglomerates oscillating between abstraction and figuration, model works and grotesques. Their motific repetitions and colorful contrasts make us think of a mystic writing pad.
It is graphic work that constitutes the center of the twin brothers’ activities, which are aimed at a three-dimensional artwork. Gert & Uwe Tobias, who regard themselves as “picture makers,” have particularly transformed the genre of the woodcut by choosing huge formats. Their oeuvre’s density of art-historical references results in a both contemporary and ancient visual language unfolding the new with an old patina.
In occasion of the exhibition an artist book will be published by Snoeck Verlagsgesellschaft.
