Mike Parr, born in 1945, ranks among today’s most radical performance artists. In parallel to international movements of the 1970s, Parr set out on his career as an artist in Australia with provocative appearances testing the limits of his body and his physical capacity as far as self-mutilation. His art is determined by the trauma of being born with only one arm and is concerned with the artist’s identity, with self-control and memory. Aimed at triggering unusual reactions on the part of the viewer, Parr’s performances use shock, pain, disgust and taboo to activate a discussion on ethical issues and art.
