HANNAH WEINBERGER
18 October 2014 - 11 January 2015
Engagement and participation form the basis of Hannah Weinberger’s artistic activity. She exploits the potential of music and space both to bring harmony to collective performances and to grant every viewer a performative role within the work. One of the most exciting artists emerging from a young, Swiss generation, Weinberger’s installations usurp expectations and charter new grounds in collaborative art production.
With primarily audio elements, Weinberger’s exhibition at the KUB Arena will transform the ground floor of the Kunsthaus Bregenz into a sort of audio workshop — an flexible space where visitors are invited to contribute and determine the direction and form of the project itself. As Weinberger says, »I like the moment when one doesn’t know where something is leading, or what the result will be.« The KUB Arena will become a sort of playground where a visitor is invited to create and shape the exhibition together with the artist. In lieu of a static exhibition and then a series of events, Hannah Weinberger conceived her exhibition at the KUB Arena itself to be an on-going event. Artists, musicians and others will be invited to visit Bregenz for a certain period of time to engage with the installation and with the members of the local community — ultimately including them in her process of thinking and working as an artist.
Part of Weinberger’s KUB Arena exhibition will take place outside the Kunsthaus with sculptures scattered throughout the Kornmarktplatz. Large, heavy boulders from the Swiss mountains were each carefully transformed by hand into large, resonating speakers. Removed from their original natural environment, these »singing stones« are amplify a variety of looped sound material while eschewing conventional understandings of audio equipment. Sculpture becomes sound, and sound becomes sculpture.
Hannah Weinberger’s work has been shown internationally with great acclaim and as the first large presentation of her unique artistic practice in Austria — Weinberger’s KUB Arena exhibition is a project tailored for especially the Kunsthaus Bregenz.
