“Die Deutschen kamen nicht – Niemcy Nie Przyszli – The Germans Did Not Come “, an exhibition in the frame of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016, is dedicated to the post war history of Wrocław from the perspective of contemporary art. Due to the complex and multifaceted past the city is full of layered narratives and stories yet untold. The title refers to a widespread fear that stayed with the inhabitants of Wrocław even many years after the war: that its previous inhabitants – the Germans – would return and reclaim their property. The participating artists formulate a contemporary perspective on the memorial archive of the city. Narratives of witnesses of its history, but also visual transformations of the material testimony of the city stimulate the visitors to look for and interpret traces of a shared past of flight, eviction and new beginnings afterwards, most of which we pass by on our daily routines without noticing them.
