HUNDERTWASSER - THE ART OF THE GREEN PATH
7 July - 6 November 2011
With the exhibition "In Hundertwasser's World", KUNST HAUS WIEN honours the artist on whose philosophy and artistic principles this institution is largely based. The 20th anniversary of KUNST HAUS WIEN, a museum which unites, under one roof, international temporary exhibitions and a permanent Hundertwasser Museum that is unique the world over, offers an occasion for this special exhibition project. For a period of four months, all of KUNST HAUS WIEN will thus be devoted to Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
The exhibition is conceived as a thematic and associative pathway through the intellectual and artistic cosmos of Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 - 2000). This journey through Hundertwasser's world takes us to selected focal points of his artistic life. These include such striking moments as the scandal caused by "The Hamburg Line" during his period of study at the University of Fine arts in Hamburg or his legendary attic studio on Spiegelgasse as one of the pivotal centres of the art scene in Vienna in the 1960s.
Another station of the journey is devoted to the subject of "Regentag" (Rainy Day): Hundertwasser's ship of the same name in the lagoon of Venice or on the high seas, the film made by Peter Schamoni in 1972 and Hundertwasser's thoughts about the term "Regentag". Hundertwasser's speeches against rationalism in architecture, which he gave in the nude in 1967 and 1968 in Munich and Vienna, are examined in the context of international action art at that time.
Against the backdrop of Hundertwasser's artistic credo and his crusade against the rigidity of modernism in art and architecture, the exhibition also explains his concept for the founding of KUNST HAUS WIEN. In a special section, the exhibition attempts to trace Hundertwasser's path from art to ecology and his pioneering ecological commitment as seen in the light of current developments.
This exhibition, which has the character of a visual and textual essay, has been conceived as a temporary supplement to the Hundertwasser Museum, and ideally the two should be visited in combination. The approach taken in exploring the world of the multi-talented Hundertwasser has its own special syntax, composed of a variety of elements: selected key works by Hundertwasser are juxtaposed with works by some of his contemporaries, documentary material accompanies photo series on Hundertwasser by renowned photographers, and original quotes by Friedensreich Hundertwasser are placed in proximity with the words of contemporaries to create a multilayered textual level.
