LOUISE BOURGEOIS
"Fugue"

16 January 2007 - 08 April 2007

The Museum of Fine Arts Bern has been following the work of Louise Bourgeois for fifteen years in the form of exhibitions and regular purchases of her works. The main focus of the current exhibition in the Kabinett is the newly acquired collection of graphics Fugue (2003 - 2005). The nineteen-part series is based on coloured pencil and ink drawings done on music-paper that Louise Bourgeois converted to lithographs on the advice of the printing studio Procuniar Workshop in New York. Blood-red spirals, circles and lines, blue squares and violet bars as well as words unfold across the staves for musical notes. The title Fugue stands for the way in which the elements of the image are altered, repeated and brought together
with each other. The exhibition also offers the unique opportunity to view the sketchbook that served as the paradigm for the lithographs and which the artist has made available as a loan for this presentation.
