LEDA BOURGOGNE | IDA EKBLAD

This duo exhibition of Leda Bourgogne and Ida Ekblad is a dialogue between two artists who both start from painting and go beyond it. Preoccupied with language, the body, and what – more or less consciously – connects one to the other, Leda Bourgogne points out identity constructions and power relations. She handles textiles such as velvet and jersey, associated with 1990s grunge, or skin-like, fetishized latex in her paintings, which she treats like a loving or suffering body. On the other hand, pop cultural gestures such as graffiti and comics can be found in Ida Ekblad‘s striking and expressive work. Whether using an airbrush or thickly applied, material-effect paint as on 1980s sweatshirts – Ida Ekblad’s artistic practice is process-oriented and demonstrates an anarchic spirit. If the free approach to painting as a medium and a contemporary love of citation can be regarded as essential similarities, the contrast between both positions is all the more striking because of their very different characters.
Leda Bourgogne (born 1989 in Vienna, AT) finished studying Fine Arts at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main in 2017 as a master student of Judith Hopf. She has shown her works in group exhibitions such as at the MINI / Goethe-Institut Ludlow 38, New York (2017), the Vleeshal, Middelburg (NL), and the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden (both 2018).
Ida Ekblad (born 1980 in Oslo, NO) studied at the Central St. Martins College of Art in London, at the National Academy of Art in Oslo, and at the Mountain School of Arts in Los
Angeles. In addition to participating in the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2017, her works have been shown in solo shows such as at the Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2010), the Bergen Kunsthall (2010), Kunsthaus Hamburg (2017), and as part of a group exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2010).
GUEST ROOM: LUZIE MEYER
As commentary on and point of contrast to the current main exhibition, artists and curators
are invited to stage interventions in the space that once was used as guest room. At the invitation of Leda Bourgogne, Luzie Meyer (born 1990 in Tübingen, DE) will present a new video trailer and parts of the script of The Flute (2018). Based on performative and textual works, the artist transfers philosophical ideas into everyday, deliberately absurd contexts.
