This exhibition surveys the work of Albert Oehlen, unanimously acknowledged as one of the most influential painters of our time.
The show gives us a chance to appreciate the full scope and range of Oehlen's output since he abandoned figuration in the late 1980s. Customised to the artist's specifications, this brand-new production was conceived to make his art accessible to the public that frequents La Casa Encendida.
Despite having lived through a historic period alongside other memorable German artists like Werner Büttner and Martin Kippenberger in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Albert Oehlen has always marched to the beat of a different and inimitable drummer, even while remaining an active participant in the art scene of his day. The artist challenges us to evaluate and interpret a body of work that progressively demolishes practically all of our beliefs about painting, blazing new trails of appreciation.
Oehlen's art is characterised by a singular heterogeneity, method, palette and genre. In his work, painting is both subject and medium. His skilful use of collage, abstraction and figuration establish a unique inter-stylistic dialogue, a process reminiscent of the Surrealist "exquisite corpse" in which one method follows another in a seemingly spontaneous manner, thus composing a complete colour field. The incorporation of computer-assisted designs adds yet another dimension to his works, juxtaposing the artist's hand and the mechanical imprint to weave a fabric of visual action and reaction.
Albert Oehlen (b. Krefeld, Germany, 1945) lives and works in Germany, Switzerland and Spain. Recent solo show venues include the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1997); Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg (2002); Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami (2005); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2006); Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2009); Räume für Kunst, Freiburg, Germany (2010); and Carré d’Art, Nîmes (2011). The Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, hosted a retrospective of his work in 2004–2005.
