The connection between man and nature was one of the central concerns of the expressionists. Before World War I (1914–18), nature often was seen as a positive force, and many artists found inspiration in it to reinvigorate form and revitalize art making. The horrors of the war, however, and the economic and political chaos that ensued shattered many artists' idealistic visions.
