June 25 – July 31, 2009 I opening reception: Thursday, June 25, 6 to 8 pm
Galerie Lelong will present "My Summer Show," an exhibition curated by Cristina Delgado and featuring works by Richard Aldrich, Markus Amm, John Bock, Josh Brand, Alex Hubbard, Sergej Jensen, Michael Krebber, Daniel Lefcourt, Simon Dybbroe Møller, Jenny Monick, Manfred Pernice, Josh Smith, Matt Sheridan Smith and Josef Strau. These 14 artists use diverse styles and media—photography, painting, sculpture and assemblage—in their exploration of process and abstraction. "My Summer Show" opens to the public on Thursday, June 25 from 6 to 8 pm.
The artists in the exhibition represent a wide range of backgrounds, spanning generations and countries of origin. Though some of the artists (John Bock, Manfred Pernice, Sergej Jensen) are already well known internationally, a number of them—such as Jenny Monick, Alex Hubbard, Markus Amm—are early in their careers. "My Summer Show" demonstrates that, notwithstanding current trends, abstraction remains an integral language to contemporary artists.
Delgado, an independent art consultant based in New York, employed an intuitive visual approach and chose the artists' works most evocative of the season. In describing her association with summer, the curator writes:
breezy, lazy afternoons, hot beach days and cool waters, sharks, cookouts by the lake, fishing, swimming, kayaking, trout, bass, stripers, fly-fishing, shimmering waters, silence so loud it pounds, solitude & a slow fade into landscape, blue herons skimming the streams, an occasional bear sighting, rattlers, bacon cooking on skillet. My Summer Show = THIS.
