The exhibition “Frucht & Faulheit” (fruit and laziness) or (fruit and idleness) examines the finding and shaping of identity, the narration and magic of nature, the mystical, and progress and the (false) enchantments of capitalism in the context of a (post-) colonial brazil. It collects works from young, Brazilian artists as it leafs through the pages of the Brazilian modernism of Mario and Oswald de Andrade. “Frucht & Faulheit” poses questions about the conditions of culture, community and nation as well as the links between these concepts.
The exhibition attempts to follow the aesthetic traces of Mario de Andrades “Macunaíma” (1982) and Oswald de Andrades “Cannibal Manifesto” (1928) in Brazil’s contemporary art. Both texts had an immediate effect on the authors’ contemporaries and left a decisive mark, not just on the literature of the following decades, but also on the development of Brazil’s fine arts.
Both authors were concerned with an independent consciousness, the founding of a tropical regionalism and a manifesto for the establishment of the character of Brazil with respect to the colonial and capital influences of Europe. Seen from the present, however, the question arises what has become of this attempt, and how could current artistic expression look as seen by the declarations of modernism.
