FERNANDA GOMES
27 September - 22 October

Galeria Luisa Strina opens an individual exhibit by Fernanda Gomes on the 27th of September. This is the artists’ sixth exhibit in the gallery that has been representing her since 1990, showcasing recent and new works which are the result of a radical investigation of painting and sculpture, space and autonomy.

Fernanda Gomes has been amassing a singular work for more than twenty years, with vast repercussion both nationally and internationally, carrying out individual and collective exhibits in almost every country in Europe, as well as the United States, Mexico, Australia and Japan. She has participated in the São Paulo, Istanbul, Sydney and Venice Art Biennials. Her work is present, among others, in the collection of Tate Modern, Miami Art Museum, Fundación/Colección Jumex, Vancouver Art Gallery and Museu Serralves, where she created a permanent sculpture in the museum’s park. She also appears in the collections of Museu da Pampulha and Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, which will hold a large exhibit by the artist in the end of this year.

“Avoiding art genres and categories, Fernanda Gomes recycles within the spectator an experience of sculpture and painting, between the object and the space, the light and the shadow, the composition and the dispersion” (...) “The exhibit is the work of art itself, in a reinvention of the space from the objects which compose its structure. Fernanda Gomes incorporated history, humour and nostalgia to her work, a combination which results in a deep personal experience to the spectator”, states João Fernandes, curator and director of the Museu Serralves, in the presentation of the exhibit by the artist in the museum.

In the words of the artist herself, “Painting, sculpture, architecture. Tradition of ruptures. Thought is plastic. Reflexion dimensions, with multiple meanings. So many questions at the core of this investigation, light!, colour: white. Line, plane, volume, space. Simple. To activate the senses. Detachments, displacements, also in imagination. Painting and sculpture articulate a total space, and autonomy. Perspectives revealed in the movement by the beholder. To include the world’s landscape. To play freely with things, because they are, after all, things. To leave behind the verb, with rigour and emotion”.
