Galeria Luisa Strina is delighted to present an exhibition by Fernanda Gomes, celebrating 20 years since the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery. This will be Gomes’s seventh show since the collaboration began in 1990, with her exhibitions at Galeria Luisa Strina consistently presenting recent and unseen work. The exhibition is part of Galeria Luisa Strina’s programme celebrating the gallery’s 40th anniversary this year.
Fernanda Gomes (Rio de Janeiro, 1960) held her first exhibition in 1988, obtaining since the mid 90’s large national and international repercussion. She held solo and group exhibitions in almost all European countries as well as the United States, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Participated in the Bienal de São Paulo (1994/2012), Istanbul (1995/2013), Sydney (1998 ) and Venice (2003). Her work is present in several private and public collections of great importance as the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Tate Modern, London, Museo Jumex, Mexico, Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, Miami Art Museum, Vancouver Art Gallery and Museum Serralves, for which the park created a permanent sculpture. Her work has been the subject of analysis in articles published in specialized journals such as Art Review, Flash Art, Art Press, Art News, Artforum, Art in America and ArtNexus.
“to begin with space and light. possibilities are multiple and unpredictable. things are gradually constructed as sequential perspectives, one moment after another. transferring to the exhibition space the recurring process of many years, each day lighter and more intense. the situation is the same and different. the more that is unknown, the better. devouring without deciphering. looking to see. thinking while making, simple, pure joy.
all materials serve immateriality. it would be contradictory if it were not complementary. thought seeks concrete vision in order to refuel itself. imagination is based on the real, and creates realities. everything transforms – such is the law. life is absurd, why try to understand art? it is better to make, live, and love.”
