OTOLITH GROUP

04/02/2011 - 29/05/2011 MACBA

The work of the Otolith Group, founded in London in 2000 by Anjalika Sagar and Eshun Kodwo, presents a reflection on perception and the nature of human memory through films, texts and activities related to media archives. Expanding on the documentary genre, their films acquire a collage-like effect of images that refer to a new atlas that narrates the different forms of the post-colonial condition. From the ideology of the Cold War to the processes of global capitalism, recent history appears as fragments of a personal diary which, in turn, could be fiction.

This exhibition is conceived like a production site that allows the viewer to understand a working methodology through materials that document complex decision making processes which shape the final work, becoming a reflection of more than just the films. It also serves as a space where different research efforts reverberate, with an outlook towards developments in future works. An exhibition like the one of the Otholit Group is not only a presentation, but also an opportunity for the artistic, as well as a broader community to engage in the cultural debates that are crucial to situate major questions in the evolution of contemporary political and aesthetical identity.
