Summary
Artist Geneviève Cadieux was invited to create her own tableau of the MAC Collection out of the 7,800 works it currently holds. Cadieux explains the challenge she was faced with In going through these works, and which made her choice all the more difficult: “There are so many fascinating and important pieces in this collection that I could easily put together not just one exhibition, but three consecutive shows. What I will be presenting in the spring will therefore be the most urgent show, the show I have to express and present in the gallery now, at this specific point in time.”
Geneviève Cadieux is, without doubt, an exemplary figure in Québec and Canadian photography. She ranks as one of the leading artists of her generation and is associated with the re-emergence of photography as a major discipline in contemporary art. She has also taught since 1999, demonstrating her deep commitment to the artistic community.
Biography
Geneviève Cadieux represented Canada at the Venice Biennale in 1990, exhibited at the Tate Gallery, London, in 1995, and presented a video in Times Square, New York, in 2002. The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal held the first critical survey of her work in 1993. Her work may be found in major public collections such as those of the Musée national d’art moderne – Centre Pompidou, Paris; FRAC Aquitaine, Bordeaux; Fundacio Caïxa de Pensiones, Madrid; Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo; and National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.
