How do I tell you a story you already know ? - You don’t.

Curator: Dr. Virginija Vitkienė

In partnership with the Kaunas Biennial 2013, the work of Vytautas Viržbickas will be presented. This young Lithuanian artist who was born in 1987 and lives and works in Vilnius likes working with space and materials. His works mingle installations and figurative sculpture which he approaches in an innovative way by conferring a certain theatricality on them. Nonetheless, immateriality – emotional, intellectual, etc. – plays an important role in his work. This combination of the material and the immaterial and their ability to intertwine endow his work with great poetry and a certain sensitivity.

For his exhibition at MAGASIN, the artist has chosen to present a new installation that breaks down into three compositions. The installation is constructed like a film, with a linear narrative, using the codes and language of myth, familiar to everyone.

The title of the exhibition is directly linked to that new installation. The interrogative form makes it permissible to analyse the installation. The question “How do I tell you a story you already know?” refers to one of the compositions in the installation which deals with a myth – a story familiar to everyone – while the answer “You don’t.” refers to a second composition in the same installation, the emerged part of the iceberg, as representing partial information about a given fact. For the artist perceives fragments of information as being the only solution faced with the narrative form of a familiar story. He states that knowledge destroys curiosity and the desire to learn. Through this installation, he attempts to analyse the problems associated with “storytelling”.
