JAN FABRE
"Lancelot"
Opening:
Friday 28 April 2006 7:00 p.m.
to 30th Giugno
The Magazzino d'Arte Moderna is pleased to present Lancelot, the first exhibition in the gallery by artist Jan Fabre. Featured in the show is the evocative video Lancelot (2004) and a series of drawings and sculptures.
Fabre's artistic practice is characterised by a multi-faceted eclectism and by the artist's innate passion for empirical research. One could define Fabre as "multi-disciplinary" but even this definition is limited with respect to his inventiveness and production. The research of Fabre is a constant attempt to connect science and humanism. Fabre applies his knowledge of entomology to various creative fields, from figurative art to choreography, but, like a Renaissance thinker, revolutionises each of the disciplines in which he works.
Visual artist, playright, choreographer, scenographer, publisher and actor, Giacinto di Pietrantonio defines Fabre as a "contemporary Leonardo Da Vinci, yet closer in sensibilty and open-minded imagination to the surrealist fantasy of Bosch and to the hallucinatory realism of Jan Van Eyck." Jan Fabre is capable of applying the same tension and magic to all creative fields, carrying us to a dimension full of profound suggestions and possibilities.
The work of Jan Fabre is housed in many international museums and important private collections. A selection of significant exhibitions include the Venice Biennial (1984, 1990, 2003), Documenta in Kassel (1982, 1992), and the Istanbul Biennial (1992, 2001). In 2006 Fabre has two important shows in Antwerp at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art. In July he also has a solo show in the Museum for Modern Art in Dubrovnik. Other solo shows include SMAK, Ghent; the Galleria d'Arte Contemporanea, Bergamo; the Stedelijk Museum, Ghent; and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon. In 2005 Fabre was the co-director of the Avignon Festival.
At the request of the Queen of Belgium, in 2002 Fabre completed "Heaven of Delight", decorating the ceiling of the Reception Hall of the Royal Palace in Brussels with 1,500,000 beetles.
