2 x [ (2 x 20) + (2 x 2) ] + 2 = X x (desperately) trying to figure out the world
25 Oct - 20 Dec 2008
2 x [ (2 x 20) + (2 x 2) ] + 2 = X x (desperately) trying to figure out the world
curated by Konrad Bitterli
Part I: Mai 36 Galerie, Zürich, October 25 - December 20, 2008;
Part II: Brooke Alexander Gallery, New York, November 11 - December 20, 2008
25 october - 20 december 2008
The somewhat cryptic equation in the exhibition title refers to the anniversary of the Mai 36 Galerie, which was opened exactly 20 years ago with a solo exhibition by Les Levine in Lucerne, to Victor Gisler and Luigi Kurmann, to the two gallery venues in Lucerne and Zurich, to the twice twenty artists who realised solo exhibitions during twenty years gallery work and who are among the gallery‘s regular programmatic artists and to the two exhibitions organised for this occasion in Zurich and New York. The play on numbers formulates the anniversary exhibition, while at the same time decisively referring to the contents: X x (desperately) trying to figure out the world.
The desperate attempt to explain the world is intended to bring together different artistic approaches that portray the recording of reality and its permanent interpretation of the essential driving force of artistic creativity. The pronouncedly artistic view of the world is connected with a basic reflection on the means and possibilities of the media in question (painting, drawing, photography and video). It also refers to the complex union between conceptual aspiration and a specific view of the world that meaningfully connects the different generations of artists in the Mai 36 Galerie – as an X x (desperately) trying to figure out the world. [Text: Konrad Bitterli; translation: Maureen Oberli-Turner]
The opening day in Zurich is on Saturday, October 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The opening day in New York is on Friday, November 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. We are pleased to provide you with visual material on request (office@mai36.com)
