COLLECTIVE FURNITURE – LET’S CREATE TOGETHER
A Cooperation Between Breadedescalope and Neue Wiener Werkstätte With The Mak Vienna
10 – 14 December 2014

Collective Furniture is a moderated and communal design process during which the interested public cannot only observe the creation of a piece of furniture, but also actively participate in this undertaking. Decisions and compromises in development will be reached through discussions, votes, and workshops in order to further consolidate certain specifications and parameters. The online platform www.collectivefurniture.at serves as the core communication tool for this purpose.

The project was developed by breadedEscalope and is now being realized by the Neue Wiener Werkstätte with the support of departure, the Creative Unit of the Vienna Business Agency. The aim is to work through all of the stages of product development—from the initial gathering of ideas via the first prototypes to the final product that is ready to go into production—together and with the influence of the community in the course of a year-long process. The theme of the piece of furniture has already been specified and concerns the workplace at home.

In the course of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2014, breadedEscalope and the Neue Wiener Werkstätte presented their joint project Collective Furniture to the general public for the very first time. It kicked off with an evening of talks by experts from various specialist fields, which were followed by a panel discussion that provided introductions to the topic from different points of view. In a subsequent project stage, interested participants could build on existing ideas that had been collected via an online platform, draw up initial designs, and even build mock-ups during open workshops.
