Marian Goodman Gallery is delighted to announce an exhibition and the world premiere of a major new body of work by Thomas Struth. The exhibition will open to the public on Wednesday May 5th and will be on view through Saturday, June 19th, 2010.
A hardcover catalogue featuring 17 color plates and an essay by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh titled Lost Evidence: Thomas Struth's Photographs and the Incommensurable will be published on the occasion of the exhibition. We are pleased to announce that this exhibition marks the 12th exhibition and our 20th anniversary of working with the artist.
Thomas Struth has created an ambitious new series of pictures that reveal the exploration of an entirely new subject matter. Following his signature position of precise observation and expanding his previous categories of the depiction of urban spaces and monuments in relation to history, Struth penetrates the interiors of usually undisclosed structures in this new group of works, transporting himself into the backstages of our contemporary shared reality — a new territory of representation for the artist.
Created throughout Asia, Europe and the Americas, the images record the structural intricacy of remote techno-industrial and scientific research spaces: physics institutes, pharmaceutical plants, space stations, dockyards, nuclear facilities and other edifices of technological production. They reveal a fascinating critical scrutiny of the high ambitions in which the promises of scientific advancement entangle us. Taken as a series, the pictures convey what these charged environments — though not often accessible to the public — communicate about the large-scale maneuvers of human history, the convoluted pace of our 'progress', and how innovation can manifest itself as a visual record of the unfathomable.
Concurrent with the exhibition, a European retrospective of his work, Thomas Struth: Photographs 1978 – 2010 will be open from June 10th through September 19th at Kunsthaus Zurich. The retrospective will travel to Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K20, Düsseldorf; The Whitechapel Gallery, London; and Museo Serralves, Porto. A catalogue with 280 plates including 130 color plates with texts by Armin Zweite, Tobias Bezzola, James Lingwood and Annette Kruzynski will accompany the touring exhibition.

Thomas Struth was born in 1954 in Geldern, Germany and now lives in Düsseldorf and Berlin. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts Düsseldorf, 1973 – 1980. In 1978 he was the first artist in residence at P.S. 1 Studios, Long Island City. From 1993 – 1996 he was the first Professor of Photography at the newly founded Hochschule fur Gestaltung, Karlsruhe. He was awarded the Spectrum International Photography Prize, Stiftung Niedersachsen, Germany in 1997, and the Werner Mantz Prize for Photography, Maastricht, The Netherlands, 1992.
Recent solo exhibitions include Thomas Struth, the Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens, Greece (2009); Familienleben, SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne, Germany (2008); Thomas Struth, MADRE: Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina, Naples, Italy (2008); Photographs by Thomas Struth, Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Symra, Florida (2007); Making Time, Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Spain (2007); Thomas Struth: Museo de Arte de Lima, Peru (2005); Pergamon Museum, Museum für Fotografie, Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin, Germany (2004). In 2002 – 2003 a retrospective of his work was shown at The Dallas Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), Los Angeles; The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; and Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago.
