These Days, Very Happy
31 October 2012 - 15 December 2012

On October 31, Massimo De Carlo gallery will inaugurate personal shows by Liu Xiaodong and Yan Pei-Ming. The two Chinese artists will display for the first time together in the spaces of Via Ventura, Milan, presenting two projects titled These Days, Very Happy and Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer: Landscapes.

Liu Xiaodong, an internationally famous Chinese artist living and working in Beijing, is the painter of reality. His canvasses, often very large with intense colours, narrate contemporary China as though they were photographs. Glimpses of daily life are projected into an intimate and private dimension.

The same atmosphere can be found in the new works in the gallery presented by the artist, specially created for the event. Passing a month in Milan, Liu Xiaodong has created an event in the event - he painted his models from life, observing in direct contact and studying them in great detail before drawing them. Liu Xiaodong’s work could be seen day after day and the white canvasses gave way to highly chromatic, photographic quality paintings. Oval canvasses welcome a convivial scene of people taking part in a banquet, drawn in the form of half-length portraits of women. The people represented and the form chosen for the pictorial support are a clear reference to Italian and European late Renaissance and baroque tradition which the artist decided to reinterpret in a modern manner.

As to establish an artistic collaboration, a double portrait made by the two artists concludes the show.
