Massimo De Carlo is pleased to present OH!, a group show at the Galerie Patrick Seguin in Paris, featuring works conceived and created specifically for this occasion. Abstract works – mostly large-scale paintings – where renowned dealer Massimo De Carlo sets out to compare young artists (Dan Colen, Nate Lowman, Rashid Johnson, Kaari Upson) with several heavyweights of the modern art scene (John Armleder, Massimo Bartolini, Rudolf Stingel and Yan Pei-Ming). The result is a lively dialogue that is sure to elicit the amazement of viewers – hence the title of the show – in terms of the sizes, the different techniques employed, and the materials used: from the latest chapter in the series of self-portraits by Rudolf Stingel to the textures of Dan Colen; from the drippings of John Armleder to the mirrored, smoke-blackened surfaces of Kaari Upson; from the lights of Massimo Bartolini that recall southern Italy's patronal festivals to Rashid Johnson's representative mirrored tiles; from the textured brushstrokes of Yan Pei-Ming to the “dirty” canvases of Nate Lowman.
John Armleder was born in Geneva in 1948, and his works have been exhibited in the most important international contemporary art museums, like the Institute of Contemporary Art of Boston and of Philadelphia, the Kunsthalle of Zurich, the Consortium of Dijon, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sydney, the MoMA of New York and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Exhibitions at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice (2011), MAMCO - Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain of Geneva (2007), at Kunstverein of Hannover and at Tate Liverpool (2006) are amongst his most recent ones. On October 18, 2011 the Palais de Tokyo inaugurates the solo exhibition All of the Above – Carte Blanche à John M Armleder.
Massimo Bartolini was born in Cecina, Italy, in 1962. He lives and works in Cecina, Italy. In his intense career he participated to several national and international exhibitions amongst which the International Triennale on Contemporary Art, Yokoama in 2011, Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte – La Biennale di Venezia in 2009 and in 1999, and the 6th Shanghai Biennale in 2006. Amongst his solo shows are Art Unlimited, Art Basel 42, Basel (2011); Massimo Bartolini: Cor at South London Gallery, London (2010); Dialoghi con la Città at MAXXI, Rome (2008); Museu Serralves, Porto (2007). Furthermore, amongst the group shows: Sotto quale cielo? at Palazzo Riso, Palermo (2011); Terre Vulnerabili, Hangar Bicocca, Milan (2010); Ecstasy: In and About Altered States, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2005). The last June his personal show Il Cuore in Mano opened at the Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu, Turon (Poland).
Dan Colen was born in Leonia, New Jersey, in 1979. Lives and works in New York. His works have been acquired by the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, by the Saatchi Gallery in London and by the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo. He has participated in many exhibitions: 2010 Skin Fruit: Selections from the Dakis Joannou Collection, curated by Jeff Koons at the New Museum, New York (2010); Abstract America: New Painting and Sculpture, Saatchi Gallery, London (2009); New York Minute: 60 Artisti della scena newyorchese at the MACRO Future, Rome (2009). He took part in the 2006 Whitney Biennial. The 21st of January 2011 the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo opened Peanuts, his first solo show in an European museum.
Rudolf Stingel was born in Merano, Italy, in 1956. Lives and works between Merano and New York. His recent solo exhibitions are Rudolf Stingel. LIVE at the Neue National Galerie in Berlin (2010); Rudolf Stingel at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (2007). He has participated in the following group exhibitions: The World Belongs to You, at Palazzo Grassi in Venice (2011); Off the Wall / Fora De Parede at the Serralves Foundation in Porto (2011); Fresh Hell at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2010); Mapping the Studio: Artists from the François Pinault Collection at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana in Venice (2009).
Rashid Johnson was born in Chicago in 1977. Lives and works in New York. Among his solo exhibitions are Smoke and Mirrors at the Sculpture Center of Long Island City (2009); The Dead Lecturer: Laboratory, Dojo, and Performance Space at the Power House in Memphis (2009); Sharpening My Oyster Knife at Kunstmuseum Magdeburg (2008). Among his group exhibitions we remember in 2011: American Exuberance at the Rubell Family Collection in Miami; INTERNAL / EXTERNAL AFFAIRS at the Residence of the Ambassador of the United States of America to Germany, Berlin; 30 Americans at the Rubell Family Collection, the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC, and at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington; Seeing Is a Kind of Thinking: A Jim Nutt Companion at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; Secret Societies. To Know, To Dare, To Will, To Keep Silente at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt and at the CAPC in Bordeaux. He took part in the 54. Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte – La Biennale di Venezia.
Nate Lowman, born in Las Vegas in 1979, lives and works in New York. He has participated in the following exhibitions: Fresh Hell at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2010); Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010); Off the Wall: Part 1 - Thirty Performative Actions at the Whitney Museum, New York (2010); Skin Fruit: Selection from the Dakis Jounnou Collection, curated by Jeff Koons at the New Museum, New York (2010); Mapping the Studio at Punta della Dogana / Palazzo Grassi, Venice (2009); New York Minute: 60 Artisti della scena newyorchese at MACRO Future, Rome (2009); Beg Borrow and Steal at the Rubell Family Collection, Miami (2009). In 2009 the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo mounted Lowman’s first comprehensive solo exhibition, The Natriot Act.
Kaari Upson was born in San Bernardino, California, and lives in Los Angeles. She studied art at the New York Studio School and at the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, where she received her BFA in 2004 and her MFA in 2007. She has exhibited at the UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2007). Amongst her group shows, she has participated in the exhibitions Nine Lives, curated by Ali Subotnik, at the Hammer Museum in California (2009); Sack of Bones, curated by Ellen Langan and Blair Taylor for Peres Projects, Los Angeles (2008); Pretty, curated by Alison Gingeras, at Gavin Brown's Enterprise & Maccarone (2008); NY Internal mechanisms, at High Energy Constructs, Los Angeles (2007); FOR EVER, curated by Clara Kim and Eungie Joo, presented at the 915 Mateo, Los Angeles (2007).
Yan Pei-Ming was born in 1960 in Shanghai, China. He moved to France in 1980 where he quickly became a star on the French painting scene. He has had solo exhibitions at such venues as the Musée d'Art Moderne in Saint-Etienne (France), the Shanghai Art Museum, the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou (China), Kunsthalle Mannheim (Germany), and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon (France). Group exhibitions include the 10th International Istanbul Biennial (curated by Hou Hanru), the 2nd International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Seville (Spain), the Grand Palais in Paris, the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, and the 1995 and 2003 Venice Biennials. His last solo exhibitions were at the French Pavilion during Expo 2010.
