YAN PEI-MING
Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer: Landscapes
31 October - 15 December 2012

On October 31, Massimo De Carlo gallery will inaugurate personal shows by Liu Xiaodong and Yan Pei-Ming. The two Chinese artists will display for the first time together in the spaces of Via Ventura, Milan, presenting two projects titled These Days, Very Happy and Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer: Landscapes.

Yan Pei-Ming, born in Shanghai, lives and works in Dijon and returns to the gallery with a new personal show. The artist is well-known to the public for his very large paintings, particularly portraits, using only white, black and red on his palette. Realistic faces with great visual impact and a strong psychological connotation are delineated by dynamic, powerful and vigorous gestures and vibrant brush-strokes.

The power and intensity which are a feature of his well-known portraits can also be found in the paintings in the exhibition. On this occasion, Yan Pei-Ming presents a series of landscapes, four of which inspired by the seasons.
Yan Pei-Ming’s landscapes, often nocturnal, gloomy and in dark colours, do not represent specific places, referring to a precise time, but are neutral, unlocalised places. The fast, material brush-strokes delineate places suspended in time, highly dramatic and the expression of an existential gaze on the world.

As to establish an artistic collaboration, a double portrait made by the two artists concludes the show.

Yan Pei-Ming was born in Shanghai in China in 1960. He lives and works in Dijon. Amongst his most recent solo shows are: Painting The History, curated by Francesco Bonami, QMA Gallery, Doha, 2012; Un jour parfait, Le Voyage à Nantes 2012, Chapelle de l'Oratoire, Nantes, 2012; Landscape of Childhood, a cura di Jerome Sans and Guo Xiaoyan, UCCA, Beijing, 2009; Les Funérailles de Monna Lisa, Musée du Louvre, Parigi, 2009. The artist has taken part in many collective exhibitions at the most important Italian and international exhibition sites: For President, curated by Mario Calabresi and Francesco Bonami, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, 2012; Tracing the Milky Way, Tang Contemporary Art, Beijing, China, 2011; La force de l’Art, Grand Palais, Paris, 2010; I (ichi) Performative Ontology, Secession, Wien, 2006.
