Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Gary Hume: The Wonky Wheel, the next exhibition in his gallery at 522 West 22nd Street.
The exhibition includes nineteen paintings and several sculptures made in the artist’s London studio over the past year. Hume has continued to expand his signature use of glossy enamel paint on aluminum panels, usually in highly keyed color combinations, by introducing entirely new compositions and motifs. Drawing inspiration from a commemorative publication celebrating the assassination of Osama bin Laden, Hume’s new compositions isolate and fragment the photographic source imagery to near total abstraction.
Several new sculptures in welded and enameled aluminum, each resembling a spoked wheel, will also be on view. This motif is based on a Navy SEAL’s telescopic gun sight, re-creating a sharpshooter’s perspective from the artist’s own point of view. Commenting on the inclusion of several flower paintings in the show, now a classic and recurring subject for the artist, Hume says, “nature will always return after history’s wonky wheel has trampled it.”
The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated hardcover publication with an essay by Graham Bader.
Gary Hume (b. 1962) lives and works in London and Accord, New York. This will be his tenth one-person exhibition at Matthew Marks Gallery since 1991. Hume represented Britain at the São Paulo Biennial in 1996 and the Venice Biennale in 1999. The artist’s work has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria, and most recently Tate Britain in London.
