Matthew Marks is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Robert Gober.
The exhibition will consist of two sculptures, several drawings, and one woodblock print, all made in the past year. These works continue to explore questions of vulnerability, nature, and history, all through the artist's unique visual idiom drawing on vernacular American forms.
In our 22nd Street gallery will be a sculpture of a plastic milk crate, resting on a cast of a wooden chair seat and filled with sculptures of green Granny Smith apples. Lying across the top of the crate is a Winchester rifle that seems to have melted. Our 21st Street gallery will hold a cast of a wooden chair seat with a sculpture of a packing blanket folded on the seat. Each sculpture is handmade to look like the natural and machine-made objects they so closely resemble.
Robert Gober began exhibiting his work publicly in 1979. In the past year, his work has been included in exhibitions at museums in Los Angeles, Houston, Oslo, Cologne, Dublin, and New York, among others. Gober's work will be the subject of a major retrospective exhibition opening May 12 at the Schaulager in Basel, Switzerland.
Robert Gober will be on view at Matthew Marks Gallery at 526 West 22nd Street and
521 West 21st Street (both between 10th and 11th Avenues) through March 10, 2007. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
