"Modern Living"
I am interested in architectural space and manipulating objects. I chose legos because they are associated with architectural forms. These ready-made objects are based on industrial and mechanical functions. I am also interested in legos as toys. Toys are childish and innocent, but they are impersonal and objective as well.
These days we live in portable and instant living conditions. I wanted to create modern architecture using concepts of portable and instant lifestyles which are prevelant in our society. To express the idea, I made lunchboxes, suitcases and drawers which contain living spaces inside.
I used semi-translucent white and fluorecent plexiglas. I was intrigued by the reflection of the fluorecent plexiglas because the reflected light from the semitranslucent surface creates a more subtle and integrated effect than using electrical lighting in a piece. The reflections are like minimal paintings. To make my suitcases, I used stainless steel handles, hinges and latches on the suitcases so you can open, close and carry them around with you like your own home.
Drawers ilustrate the concepts of organization and the transportation of personal belongings. I put handles on drawers so that my sculptures function like real drawers. When you open the drawers, there are extended architectural spaces inside, as in real buildings. When the drawers are closed, the spaces become condensed and turn into rectangular or cube-shaped sculptures. You can see different views of the work depending on how wide the drawers are opened and closed. My work occupies the border between art and architectural design. Through modern technology, my work can influence architecture in the future.
