GIOVANNI MICHELUCCI
Elementi di città
curated by Andrea Aleardi, Claudia Conforti and Corrado Marcetti
5 April - 20 May, 2012
One of the leading Italian architects of the 20th Century, celebrated for the design of the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence, the Church of the Autostrada del Sole, the University City of Rome together with Marcello Piacentini and the Galleria degli Uffizi halls with Carlo Scarpa: in his “century long life” Giovanni Michelucci (Pistoia 1891 – Fiesole 1990) traversed the complexity of the 1900s, becoming one of the protagonists in Italian architectural history and debate. MAXXI Architetettura is devoting to him the exhibition Giovanni Michelucci. Elementi di città.
Staged in collaboration with the Fondazione Giovanni Michelucci of Fiesole and the Michelucci Documentation Centre in Pistoia, the exhibition features 25 drawings realised by the architect between 1945 and 1973, 3 videos with exclusive materials and interviews, 19 photographs including the shots taken by Ugo Mulas of the Church of the Autostrada and the skyscraper on Piazza Matteotti in Livorno and a touch screen with over 100 images of his projects.
The exhibition Giovanni Michelucci. Elementi di città recounts the architect’s great design career from the post-war period through to the extraordinary vitality of his last projects. A long creative path, studded with innumerable drawings, the Elementi di città, that stand as prophecies, exhortations, teachings and mirages of a new vision of the urban reality and an architecture fully aware of its social role.
