Takashi Murakami
Jellyfish Eyes
January 6, 2007 - January 2008
Influenced by popular culture and traditional Japanese art forms, Takashi Murakami is one of the most significant artists of his generation to emerge from Japan. He has been influential internationally through curatorial projects, artworks, and mass-produced items at his Kaikai Kiki studio. His work blends East and West as well as fine art and design.
In the wallpaper installation Jellyfish Eyes in the MCA cafe, Murakami uses the vivid colors of Japanese animation and the flatness typically found in Japanese art from the work of Hokusai to manga. This wallpaper series also breaks down the distinction between painting and decoration, reflecting the influence of Andy Warhol.
