Curator: Mikala Dwyer

Primavera 2014 was curated by artist Mikala Dwyer, who herself featured in the first Primavera. Mikala brought together the work of 13 artists from around the country in an exhibition that was, in Mikala’s words, ‘verdant and abundant and a bit messy and lively and unruly.’

Featuring Ben Denham’s drawing machine work; Nick Dorey’s alchemical installation; Caitlin Franzmann’s audio helmets; video work by Madison Bycroft, Hossein Ghaemi and Ishmael Marika; Emily Hunt’s wall hangings, ceramics and prints; Barauwa Mununggurr’s shelter and bark works; sculptures by Sean Peoples’ along with his exploration of unconscious communication with The Telepathy Project (Sean Peoples and Veronica Kent); paintings by Alison Puruntatameri; Lucienne Rickard’s fragile drawings; sculptural works by Marian Tubbs that incorporated 3D printing, found objects and visual imagery; and Paul Yore’s vibrant embroidered tapestries.

Mikala has said that in bringing this diverse group of artists together she ‘hopes and believes that the works will resonate through their proximity to and entanglement with each other.’ Since her inclusion in Primavera 1992 Mikala Dwyer has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Her work is held in the MCA’s collection and has featured in several exhibitions at the MCA, including a major solo exhibition in 2000.

Primavera 2014 was the 23rd edition of the MCA’s annual exhibition of Australian artists aged 35 years and under. The Primavera exhibition series was founded in 1991 through the generous benefaction of Dr Edward Jackson AM and Mrs Cynthia Jackson AM and their family in memory of their daughter and sister Belinda.
