TWO IN ONE - auction

02 Apr 2009

Amsterdam- Christie’s and Dutch art institutions de Appel and Witte de With present
TWO IN ONE: an auction of 100 artworks by internationally acclaimed contemporary
artists. Amsterdam based de Appel and its’ Rotterdam counterpart Witte de Withasked
their premier artists to each contribute one work for realisation of future projects (such as
new housing, new programming).
TWO IN ONE is unique: both institutes for the first time seek cooperation with an
auction house and most contributing artists make their saleroom debut, sharing (15%) in
the profits. For estimates between €2,000 and €60,000, Christie’s offers works by
established artists as Joep van Lieshout and Marina Abramovic and rising stars as William
Hunt and Runa Islam. The auction takes place at May 20, the viewing opens May 14
ending the 19th - online viewing and buying is fast, fun and easy via christies.com.
From, respectively, 1975 and 1990, de Appel arts centre(Amsterdam) and Witte de With,
center for contemporary art (Rotterdam) have established themselves as international
frontrunners in the field of contemporary art and culture. Both institutions function as a
museum without collection. Not being confined by the ownership of an existing body of
works, they have both time and space to show the art that they consider relevant and
revolutionary at this very moment. The art centres do already cooperate in awarding the
Prijs voor de Jonge Kunstkritiekand hosting the Prix de Rome, won by Joep van Lieshout
in 1992. Van Lieshout is not the only laureated artist at Christie’s auction: Marina
Abramovic won (for instance) the Golden Lion Award on the Venice Biennale in 1997,
William Hunt was invited by Japanese star-artist Takashi Murakami for the Tokyo Big
Site show in 2006 and Runa Islam was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2008.
