Francois Morellet follows the principle to evoke experimental, sometimes paradoxe visual situations throughout a precise geometrical design and explains: “I love the process of a seemingly severe running system under the condition, that another system or a disturbance strikes within, it stimulates.” Influenced by the cinetical analysis of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel, 1963 the artist designed his first neon lamp object with layered light rhythms. Néons dans l’espace makes the beholder aware of the permanent tentativeness of his constantly changing projections facing a constallation, whose variability and complexity the eye is not able to capture. With a strong exertion of the eye, ephemerity and the suspense of hard shape are experienced as something persistant.
François Morellet folgt den Prinzipien, auf geometrisch-präzise Weise experimentelle, bisweilen paradoxe Seh-Situationen herzustellen, und äußerte: »Ich liebe den Ablauf eines unerbittlich scheinenden Systems unter der Bedingung, dass ein anderes System oder irgendeine Störung dazwischenschlägt, es belebt«. Angeregt durch die kinetischen Untersuchungen der Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel entwarf der Künstler 1963 sein erstes Neonröhrenobjekt mit sich überlagernden Leuchtrhythmen. Néons dans l’espace macht dem Betrachter die permanente Vorläufigkeit seiner ständig wechselnden Projektionen angesichts einer Konstellation bewusst, die das Auge in ihrer Variabilität und Komplexität nicht synchron fassen kann. Flüchtigkeit, die Aufhebung fester Form, werden hier bei höchster Anspannung des Auges als etwas Beständiges wahrnehmbar.
