Cor Dera works with animal photography taken from regular photo books. The first step in the preparation has essentially artistic-formal criteria: selection and deposition follow principal thoughts of composition, colour fading and accents in proportion between the single image and the overall view. He fixes series of reproductions on wood, which refer to a specific animal species or mixed species. They can be put in a strict geometrical order with equal distances or put randomly on the wall. The workings demonstrate our attempt to force nature in scientific systems of categorization. Recently Cor Dera said that he ought to make about 300 works more to complete his artistic conception – nature would be translated into the system of art in all its wholeness. But for Dera it also has romantic and religious dimensions: “The significance of nature in relation to art, science and religion is changing rapidly. That’s what my work is all about.” (C.D.)
Cor Dera arbeitet mit Tierfotografien, die er handelsüblichen Bildbänden entnimmt. Dabei geht er in der Bearbeitung zunächst nach rein künstlerisch-formalen Kriterien vor: die Auswahl und Anordnung erfolgt nach prinzipiellen Überlegungen zu Komposition, Farbverlauf und Farbakzenten, zum Verhältnis von Gesamtform und Einzelbild. Er fixiert Serien dieser Reproduktionen auf Holz, die sich auf eine bestimmte Tierart beziehen oder Arten vermischen. Sie können streng geometrisch mit gleichen Abständen oder frei auf der Wand angeordnet sein. Die Arbeiten zeigen unser Bestreben, Natur in wissenschaftliche Kategorien zu zwingen. Etwa 300 Arbeiten müsse er noch machen, sagte Cor Dera jüngst, dann sei seine künstlerische Konzeption erfüllt – dann sei die Natur als Ganzheit individueller Wesenheiten in das System Kunst übersetzt. Aber für Dera hat dies auch eine romantische und religiöse Dimension: »Die Bedeutung der Natur in ihrem Verhältnis zu Kunst, Wissenschaft und Religion wandelt sich rapide. Darum geht es in meiner Arbeit.« (C.D.)
