In Michael Zahn’s artistic work, the analysis of 1960s art – especially German and American Minimalism – combines with an analysis of the American surface cult, as expressed by the dominating computer language. In the early 1990s, Zahn’s pictures transformed the binary code of computer language into abstracted strips in the style of Buren or Parmentier. In the next step, Zahn used photographic portraits which he dissolved into rough pixels and made them lose themselves in formats the size of a monitor. In Untitled (Menu with Sub-Menu), the computer graph is taken back to such an extent that unambiguous reading is no longer possible – brought about by the reduction of the context menu to black-and-white, by the minimalist division of surfaces and the continuation of the strips to the edge. The context will only reveal itself via the unusual hanging of the pictures and/or their titles.
In Michael Zahns künstlerischer Arbeit verschränkt sich eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Kunst der 1960er Jahre – speziell dem deutschen und amerikanischen Minimalismus – mit einer Analyse des amerikanischen Oberflächen-Kults, wie er sich vor allem in der alles dominierenden Sprache des Computers zeigt. Zahns Bilder transformieren Anfang der 1990er Jahre den binären Code der Computersprache in abstrakte Streifenbilder à la Buren oder Parmentier. In einem nächsten Schritt benutzte Zahn fotografische Porträts, die er in grobe Pixel auflöste und in Bildformaten von der Größe eines Monitors sich verlieren lies. Die Computergraphik wird in Untitled (Menu with Sub-Menu) durch Reduktion der Kontextmenüs auf Schwarzweiß, durch eine minimalistische Flächenaufteilung und das Ausziehen der Streifen bis zum Rand soweit zurückgenommen, dass eine eindeutige inhaltliche Lesart entfällt. Der Kontext erschließt sich nur über die ungewöhnliche Hängung der Bilder beziehungsweise über den Titel.
