Adolf Fleischmann was born in Esslingen in 1892. He travelled extensively in Europe in the first half of the century, and was thus able to make contact with the major artists of his day. Presumably he was already in touch with Hölzel’s teaching in Stuttgart. Fleischmann found the right place in which to live in 1952, in New York. One characteristic of Fleischmann’s paintings derives from his work on Mondrian’s idealistic pictorial concept of horizontal-vertical order as a fundamental expression of life, and the theme of color in vibrating motion. The preference for oval picture fields is reminiscent of Cubist compositions in the manner of Braque, who also supplies the systematic surface structuring into L-shaped, interlocking elements. Fleischmann develops pictorial compositions with rhythm and a musical quality – it is no coincidence that he often uses titles like ›opus‹ or ›fugue‹.
Der in Esslingen gebürtige Adolf Fleischmann studierte in Stuttgart im Umfeld von Adolf Hölzel und reiste in der ersten Jahrhunderthälfte rastlos durch Europa. Hier traf er auf die bedeutenden Künstler seiner Zeit, bevor er 1952 den ihm entsprechenden Lebensort in New York fand. Die Beschäftigung mit Mondrians idealistischem Bildkonzept der Horizontal-Vertikal-Ordnung als fundamentalem Ausdruck des Lebens und das Thema der Vibrationsbewegung der Farbe sind Charakteristika der Gemälde Fleischmanns. Die Bevorzugung ovaler Bildfelder, die gewissermaßen ein Bild im Bild entstehen lassen, erinnert an die kubistischen Kompositionen eines Georges Braque, von dem auch die systematische Flächengliederung in L-förmige, ineinander verzahnte Elemente abgeleitet ist. Fleischmann rhythmisiert und ›musikalisiert‹ seine Bildkompositionen, die er nicht zufällig gerne mit ›Opus‹ oder ›Fuge‹ betitelt.
