Rendition of A-Z Pit Bed Customized by Daimler Art Collection, 1995

Andrea Zittel’s ‘Living Units’, mostly reduced to an area of 4-5 sqm, were initially a reaction to her cramped New York apartment in 1992. At the same time she was alluding to the furniture designs of Rodtschenko and Tatlin from the early 1920s, which also distinctly pursued the notion of practicability and functionalism. The A-Z Pit Bed exists in one version with a closed internal circular form in the artist's California home, and a second with access to the inner circle. We want to make it clear both symbolically and physically that the Daimler Art Collection is a public one, and we have therefore decided on the second version, with access. The midnight blue carpet that belongs to it (in the interior and around the Pit Bed) was selected with the artist and matched to the location and its surroundings (to correspond with Daimler AG's corporate colors).
Seit 1992 entstehen Andrea Zittels zumeist auf 4-5 qm reduzierte ›Living units‹, die zunächst eine Reaktion auf die Enge ihrer New Yorker Wohnung waren. Zugleich referiert sie auf die Möbelentwürfe von Rodtschenko und Tatlin aus den frühen 1920er Jahren, die ebenfalls entschieden die Idee der Praktikabilität und Funktionalität verfolgten. Das A-Z Pit Bed existiert in einer Version mit geschlossener innerer Kreisform in der kalifornischen Wohnung der Künstlerin, als Variation wurde eine zweite Version mit Zugang in den inneren Kreis entworfen. Dass die Daimler Kunst Sammlung eine öffentliche Sammlung ist, sollte sowohl symbolisch wie körperlich erfahrbar gemacht werden, und wir haben uns daher für die zweite Version mit Zugang entschieden. Der dazugehörige nachtblaue Teppich wurde gemeinsam mit der Künstlerin ausgewählt und auf den Ort und die Umgebung (in Entsprechung zu den Corporate Farben der Daimler AG) abgestimmt.
