The stainless steel sculpture Balloon Flower is part of Jeff Koons’ Celebration series, which the American, born in 1955, began to celebrate the birth of his son Ludwig Maximillian. Observers will find the motif of the twisted air balloon familiar from countless children’s parties and shopping street presentations. What is striking is the size of the work, which spans the concepts of kitsch and aesthetic, as well as the gleaming surface that provides onlookers with a distortion-free reflection of their childlike amazement and covetous gaze. The apparent lightness and implicit nature of the sculpture is in stark contrast to the many hundreds of man hours that went into the achieving the perfect status of this unburstable monumental balloon flower. “I believe that, nowadays in particular, the banal can act as our saving grace. Banality is one of the most important tools open to us. It acts as a great temptation as it has a subliminal effect on our feelings. That’s ultimately the degrading aspect – because one isn’t threatened by it.”
Die Edelstahlskulptur Balloon Flower gehört zu Jeff Koons’ sogenannter Celebration-Serie, die der 1955 geborene Amerikaner anlässlich der Geburt seines Sohnes Ludwig Maximillian begann. Das Motiv des zu einer gedrehten Luftballons ist dem Betrachter von zahlreichen Kinderfesten und Präsentationen in Einkaufsstraßen bekannt. Irritierend ist die Größe der zwischen Kitsch und Ästhetik changierenden Arbeit und die glänzende Oberfläche, die das kindliche Staunen und die lüsternen Blicke des Betrachters verzerrungsfrei auf ihn zurückwirft. Die scheinbare Leichtigkeit und Selbstverständlichkeit der Skulptur steht in großem Gegensatz zu den vielen hundert Arbeitsstunden, die für den Idealzustand der niemals platzenden monumentalen Luftballon-Blume nötig waren. „Ich glaube, gerade heute kann das Banale unsere Rettung sein. Banalität ist eines der wichtigsten uns zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel. Sie ist eine große Verführerin, denn sie wirkt unterschwellig auf die Gefühle. Das ist ja das Entwürdigende - weil man nicht davon bedroht wird.“
