Ugo Rondinone has been working on a series of circular pictures since the mid-1990s. While size and the technique of color application by means of stencils and spray cans remain unchanged, the pictures’ ‘atmosphere’ and ‘music’ changes with the colors. In terms of motif, Rondinone's circular pictures are references to art-historical ‘standards’: to the Targets of Jasper Johns and Kenneth Noland from the 1950s as well as to the Op Art pictures from the 1960s. Rondinone adopts these approaches and adapts them to contemporary aesthetics by means of the spray technique. With their blurred edges, the pictures develop a hypnotizing, vibrating motion which seems to attract and at the same time physically attack the onlooker. This contradictory nature of the emotions reflects the contradictory nature of the object: blurred targets.
Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre arbeitet Ugo Rondinone an der Serie der Kreisbilder. Während die Größe und die Technik des Farbauftrags mit Schablonen und Spraydose unverändert bleiben, wechselt mit den Farben ihre ›Stimmung‹, die ›Musik‹. Motivisch sind Rondinones Kreisbilder Referenzen an kunsthistorische ›Standards‹: an die Targets von Jasper Johns und Kenneth Noland aus den 1950er und an die op art Bilder aus den 1960er Jahren. Diese Ansätze greift Rondinone auf und adaptiert sie für eine zeitgenössische Ästhetik in der Technik der Sprayer. Durch das Verschwimmen der Ränder entwickeln die Bilder eine hypnotisierende, schwingende Bewegung, die den Betrachter zugleich an sich zu ziehen wie auch physisch anzugreifen scheint. Diese Widersprüchlichkeit der Empfindungen reflektiert die Widersprüchlichkeit des Objekts – verschwommene Zielscheiben.
