Working with geologists, Walter De Maria assembled 250 tons of marble, quartz and magnesite stones in Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America. The construction of the 5 Continents Sculpture at Daimler AG in Stuttgart-Möhringen preceded an unveiling at Stuttgart’s “Staatsgalerie”, at which the white stones were layered at a height of 75 centimeters over an area measuring 23.5 by 13 meters. For the Daimler Art Collection, the artist collected this volume in a container made of steel and Plexiglas, thus adding to the work’s impact as a monument to nature’s grandeur and to the symbolic synthesis of the entire globe. Harald Szeemann found a description for Walther De Maria’s more recent The 2000 Sculpture that also applies in this case: “the listing of facts acts as a protective barrier against emotions that cause the blood to circulate more erratically as we behold, inspect and vary our visual focus: this diffuse light, this multiplication of white tonalities into the distance, this richness in the midst of calm, this sacrality in fusion.”
In Zusammenarbeit mit Geologen sammelte Walter De Maria 250 Tonnen Marmor-, Quarz- und Magnesit-Brocken: in Afrika, Asien, Europa, Nord- und Südamerika. Der Aufstellung der 5 Kontinente Skulptur am Standort der Daimler AG in Stuttgart-Möhringen ging eine Präsentation in der Stuttgarter Staatsgalerie voraus, bei der die weißen Steine in einer Höhe von 75 Zentimetern auf einer Fläche von 23,5 mal 13 Metern geschichtet waren. Für die Daimler Kunst Sammlung fasste der Künstler dieses Volumen in einem Container aus Stahl und Plexiglas zusammen und steigerte so die Wirkung eines Denkmals für die Erhabenheit der Natur und für eine symbolische Synthese des Gesamtglobus. Harald Szeemann fand für Walther De Marias neuere The 2000 Sculpture eine Beschreibung, die auch hier Gültigkeit hat: „Die Auflistung von Fakten ist wie ein Schutz vor Emotionen, die das Blut unregelmäßiger zirkulieren lassen beim Erblicken, Abschreiten, Blickpunkt variieren: Diese diffuse Lichtfülle, diese Multiplikation von Weißschattierungen in die Weite, dieser Reichtum in der Stille, diese Sakralität in der Fusion.“
