In the fiftie’s Enrico Castellani detached himself from informell painting. Having modified his paintings plastically by using mounted threads and vertical foldings of the canvas, around 1960 he changed to a construction of canvas reliefs with monochrome surfaces. The surface of the painting was lined and systematically structured by rows of nails. Those were placed either underneath the canvas to elevate or placed from the front to dent the surface. The unlimited proceedable rhytmical structure, which causes differing grids of light and shaddow at the images surface was refined by Castellani throughout the years. Like Lucio Fontana and Piero Manzoni he was part of the exhibitions of the group ZERO until 1965.
Enrico Castellani löste sich Ende der 1950er Jahre von der informellen Malerei. Nachdem er mit aufgeklebten Fäden und vertikalen Faltungen der Leinwand seine Bilder reliefplastisch modifiziert hatte, ging er um 1960 zur Konstruktion von Leinwandreliefs mit monochromen Oberflächen über. Die Bildoberfläche wird unterfüttert und systematisch strukturiert durch Nagelreihen, die, unter der Leinwand angebracht, zu Erhöhungen, von vorne durch die Leinwand getrieben, zu Vertiefungen führen. Diese unbegrenzt fortsetzbare Rhythmisierung, durch die veränderliche Licht- und Schattenraster an der Bildoberfläche erzeugt werden, verfeinerte Castellani im Laufe der Jahre. Er beteiligte sich mit Lucio Fontana und Piero Manzoni bis 1965 an den Ausstellungen der internationalen Künstlergruppe ZERO.
