Since around 1990, Gerold Miller has been dedicating himself to the question of ‘pictorial quality’ in the borderline range of sculpture, three-dimensional object and relief, of defined wall areas and sculpturally defined spaces as picture media. In his work group entitled hard:edged the aspect of ready-made moves into the foreground: the profiled strips are identical in their basic form and vary only in their thickness in accordance with the size. The color is chosen from the offer of a painter's company. The personal aspect is deliberately reduced by the artist to the greatest possible extent. The hard:edged works can therefore also be seen as a comment about the incorporation of modern production methods in art.
Gerold Miller widmet sich seit etwa 1990 der Frage von ›Bildlichkeit‹ im Grenzbereich von Skulptur, plastischem Objekt und Relief, von umgrenzter Wandfläche und skulptural-bildhaft definiertem Raum als Bildträger. In der Werkgruppe hard:edged tritt der Readymade-Aspekt in den Vordergrund: Die Profilleisten haben stets die identische Grundform, variieren nur in der Stärke entsprechend der Größe. Die Farbe wird aus dem Angebot einer Lackierfirma ausgewählt. Das persönliche Moment wird vom Künstler bewußt so weit wie möglich reduziert. Die hard:edged Arbeiten können daher auch als ein Kommentar auf das Einfließen moderner Produktionsmethoden in der Kunst gelesen werden.
