“Killing the Recondite"
Los Angeles-based artist STERLING RUBY opens his exhibition “Killing the Recondite,” on Saturday April 28th at METRO PICTURES. The artist will be present for a reception open to the public on April 28th from 6 – 8pm.
Three large black sculptures, one ceramic and the others polyurethane, each mounted on spray-painted wood bases that stand as sentries to the large gallery that holds a single room size sculpture. This “monument,” is a massive, multi-level wood platform that holds two immense pink polyurethane forms, one a molten circle, the other a dripping stalagmite. The irregular skein-like surface of the polyurethane sculptures is produced by the continual dripping of the fast-drying material over armatures hung from the studio ceiling.
Ruby works simultaneously in sculpture (plastics, ceramic, wood), video, drawing, collage and digital photography to produce objects and images that converge on both the primal and futuristic, creating an indecipherable (recondite) universe that is disturbingly familiar. Other works in the exhibition employ these facets of Ruby’s wide-ranging versatility.
Born in 1972, Sterling Ruby graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received his MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In the past year, he participated in the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art and “Red Eye: L.A. Artists,” at the Rubell Collection in Miami. Ruby will have a simultaneous exhibition in New York at Foxy Production.
The opening will be on April 28th from 6-8, and the show runs thru June 9th.
