Drawing from personal memory, historical anecdote, fiction, history, films, pop culture and myths, T. J. Wilcox presents new wall-size collages and a three part film. The exhibition includes 12 large scale collages and films that tell stories about the spectrum of innocence through the viewpoints of a child, a princess and an ambitious beauty.
The first segment of the film, "A Fair Tale," takes us back to a small American town in the 1970's. Narrated from the point of view of the artist at seven years of age, we follow his memory of a family outing to a county fair with animals, skydivers and Native Americans. The tale of "Sissi, Princess of Bavaria," follows. It is a tragic story of an unhappy woman who becomes the Empress of Austria only to meet her tragic death by assassination while strolling along Lake Geneva. "The Jerry Hall Story," glamorizes the rags to riches story of the young Texan beauty. She achieves fame and the love of Brian Ferry and Mick Jagger after she moves to Paris with her $800 settlement from a car accident.
Born in 1965 in Seattle, Washington, Wilcox lives and works in New York City. Recent exhibitions include the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and the Kunstverein Munich. Gallery exhibitions include Sadie Coles HG, London; Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna; and Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne.
