JULIA HALLER
30 April - 6 June 2014

First step: two drawings, scrawled by two hands simultaneously on two pieces of paper. Two eyes, two brain hemispheres. Unlike Dieter Roth's speedy drawings done with both hands, Julia Haller's one hand knows less about the other. Her drawings are two separate and yet parallel operations. Next step: extension of this schizoid constellation by a media transformation. The lines of the results motivated by the right and left hemispheres are transformed into a homogenous line and then engraved with a CNC milling machine – the third hand – into the surface of a mineral-based panel. The grooves are treated with acrylic paint, and the remaining surface with iron oxide pigment. The aluminum fitting is linked with the panel to form one body, one object that has moved far away from the original drawings and their author.

The concentrated line seems not so much to record the intellectual movement of the artist – rather, it seems to think itself. And yet, it doesn't circle around itself, but remains tied to a more open semantic system. In the Boltenstern Raum, only pictures done by the right hand are shown. In the hanging, the left picture is included as an empty space, and because of these noticeable blind spots and the seemingly missing delimitation to the wall on the one side of the picture, these works are not perceived as self- sufficient, auratic panel pictures. Their counterparts are presented simultaneously in an exhibition at Diana Lambert in Vienna. The complexity of this series of new works lies in the segmentation of perception and transformation processes, which the brain, used to symmetry, keeps trying to complement.
