Alfadjur, men på annat sätt
Exhibition: 18 Oct - 23 Nov 2008
Milliken is pleased to announce a three person exhibition Alfadjur, men på annat sätt, (Alfa males, but in another way) with Robert Lucander, Eberhard Havekost and Daniel Pflumm. This exhibition is a long awaited project that began as a conversation with Robert Lucander about the Berlin art and music scene from the mid 90's. These artists are independent voices that thrived during a period of artistic vibrancy and collegiality in the city of Berlin. The gallery is pleased to host these artists in Stockholm for this exhibition. In addition Daniel Pflumm, Robert Lucander and Eberhard Havekost will play their own music at Allmänna Galleriet (Kronobergsgatan 925 t-bana Fridhelmsplan) All are welcome to join.
In his figurative paintings on wood or paper, Robert Lucander, recontextualizes gestures as conventions of representation in stark paintings with color field or color abstract backgrounds. Lucander’s last solo exhibition with the gallery occurred exactly four years ago during the last American election. Apropos new works illustrate two "fellas" wearing tracksuits holding their outturned empty pockets in an ironic gesture that says, “See, nothing here.” It isn’t only politicians that are retooled on "mainstreet" characters, but fashion icons, movie stars, and fantasy stereotypes like gun toting cowboys that, among other things, mock gender stereotypes.
Daniel Pflumm's work uses pop-minimalist techniques that reclaim common logos, symbols, and music references from corporations that have stolen design ideas from artists, architects and composers. He often excludes the text elements and adds layers of sound, visual context, and location that when combined deny the viewer the promises associated with the desire-product-satisfaction relationship. As a generation realized that a unified strong capitalist Germany was a difficult promise in the 90's, Pflumm opened music clubs in Berlin such as Panasonic and Elektro that with his prints, light sculptures and music video loops addressed the relationship between sound and image or space and body. He opened a product line that questioned a whole language of ideas that were sponsored by a new age of consumers.
Eberhard Havekost makes dense, anti-gestural paintings that explore the tension between a highly mediated image and the immediacy of a seductively painted surface. For instance in Glück 2008, (Good Luck) a painting portrays a tree close-up in the foreground with bright yellow fields in the distance. In the bottom portion of the work there is an unnatural distortion that is incongruous with the setting. The work is both seductive and the creator of its own visual reality. By combining photographic sensibilities in his work he alludes to the subtle shift in our understanding of all representative imagery influenced by television and video screens.
