HÉLIO OITICICA AT PALMENGARTEN
31 August – 27 October 2013

As part of the retrospective "Hélio Oiticica. The Great Labyrinth" at MMK, the Palmengarten will show three outside installations by the Brazilian artist. In one of the pavilions "Penetrável PN 14" a performance and film program will present interventions by contemporary artists.

Hélio Oiticica (1937–80) is regarded as one of the pioneers of participatory art. In the early 1960s he developed strategies in order to open new socio-political perspectives within art. He understood his role as a constructor of materiality, color, time, space and situations.
The principle of the proposition is a reoccurring concern throughout Oiticica‘s oeuvre. His large-scale installations (Penetráveis) enable new spaces of perception and interaction to emerge through their specific aesthetic and architectural qualities.
For the performance and film program students of Curatorial Studies have invited twelve young international artists and art collectives to develop propositions which engage with the installation Penetrável PN 14 at Palmengarten. Site specific propositions ranging from experiments with sound, language and dance, to projections, salon evenings and guided tours have emerged from this process. The new works draw diversely on Hélio Oiticica’s concepts and ideas, translating them into the present day. On three of the dates, the performances will be accompanied by a film program.
Here, films and videos from contemporary artists will be shown alongside those of Oiticica’s peers Charles Simonds and Jack Smith.

Curatorial Students:
Fanti Baum, Marie Beckmann, Miriam Bettin, Nadine Droste, Elena Frickmann, Désirée Hailzl, Marenka Krasomil, Clare Molloy, Carolin Schulz, Milan Ther, Yanna Varbanova
