KARL HAENDEL
01.26.06 - 04.17.06

at Grand Avenue

Karl Haendel’s installations function as complex models of representation that play out in pencil on paper. While he chooses drawing as the structuring element for his work, Haendel’s practice is deeply rooted in photography’s complex relationship to news and truth. Haendel’s installation for MOCA will feature a salon-style hanging of works on paper joined by a grouping of Haendel’s 8 x 12 foot studio walls, which will be transferred to MOCA Grand Avenue from his studio. Representational, process and text-based drawings are cast within his artistic worldview, and the connection between the formal properties of drawing and the physical labor of the artist is emphasized by the inclusion of the studio walls. MOCA Focus: Karl Haendel is presented as part of MOCA Focus, a major initiative to showcase the work of emerging artists in Southern California. The exhibition is co-curated by MOCA Curatorial Assistant Gabriel Ritter and MOCA Ahmanson Curatorial Fellow Gloria Sutton, and is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

MOCA Focus: Karl Haendel is made possible by generous endowment support from The Nimoy Fund for New and Emerging Artists, the Fran and Ray Stark Foundation Fund to Support the Work of Emerging Artists and The Katherine S. Marmor Award. Major support is also provided by a multi-year grant from The James Irvine Foundation.
