Modern Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Willem Oorebeek. This is the Dutch artist’s first solo exhibition in London.
Willem Oorebeek’s work is governed by an affection for the traditions of pictorial reproduction and the techniques of printing. The necessary organisational processes of lithography afford Oorebeek a set of systems with which he can break down and reinterpret the construction of images. For decades, his work has consistently addressed issues of pictorial and textual reproduction, the mechanics of representation, and the effects of serial repetition. Using predominantly found and archived printed matter as source material, his works are formed from reprints, overprints, and overlaying combinations of thematic order and visual analogues. Oorebeek’s is an inquisitive process-driven position that reflects on the mechanics of visual legibility and graphic sense.
Willem Oorebeek was born in Pernis, Netherlands, in 1953. He lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. In 1997 Willem Oorebeek and Aernout Mik represented the Netherlands at the 47th Venice Biennale. Oorebeek’s solo exhibitions include: MONOLITH, Once or Many, Culturgest, Lisbon, Portugal (2008); bigger, higher, leader, SMAK, Gent, Belgium (2006); Bild oder Mit dem Fuss in der Realität (with Joëlle Tuerlinckx), Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe, Germany (2004); Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg, Canada, (1998); Muren/Walls, Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1996); and MONOLITH, lettered rock, Witte de With, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1994). Recent group exhibitions include DIE LUCKY BUSH, MuHKA, Antwerp, Belgium (2008); Models & Mavericks, Museum het Domein, Sittard, Netherlands (2003); Rondom Jheronimus Bosch, Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (2001); Because there was fire in my head, South London Gallery, London (2000); Lost in Space, Kunstmuseum, Luzern, Switzerland (1997); and Kunsthal, Rotterdam (1993).
