ART IN ROSE HILL (2007-2011)

Art in Rose Hill was a series of major art commissions by Modern Art Oxford that took place over five years in Rose Hill, Oxford. Rose Hill is a city council estate located on the south-east outskirts of Oxford. The artists that created new art works for and with residents of Rose Hill included Katy Beinart, art partnership brook & black, James Capper, Jo Huyg, Sarah Kenchington, Jon Lockhart, and Maria Pask.
Art in Rose Hill directly engaged local people with the experimental art that Modern Art Oxford was known for internationally. The artists selected for Art in Rose Hill were unconventional. Their approach to art making was to intervene in the place they were working and include the participation of local people. This form of collaborative art production is related to the radical artists’ practices that developed in the 1960’s, where the emphasis was on art as a concept and an experience in which the audience has an active role.
Art in Rose Hill began with artist Jon Lockhart ‘Saturdads’ art club in 2002. Curator Sarah Mossop – then Head of Education at Modern Art Oxford – steadily developed it into a substantial programme, with a steering group from the Rose Hill community and partially funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Oxford City Council from 2007 to 2011. In her words, Art in Rose Hill‘ was like a web, expanding in multiple, interlocking directions all at once’.
This archive display gathers together materials on some of the many art events that took place in Rose Hill during that time.
