MAM PROJECT 024: DANE MITCHELL
18 November 2017 – 1 April 2018
Curated by: Kataoka Mami (Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum), Zara Stanhope (Formerly Principal Curator, Auckland Art Gallery
Dane Mitchell (b. 1976) is an artist who conducts research on the energies and dynamics of the invisible world from artistic, scientific and historical perspectives.
For this exhibition, following research encompassing the world of traditional Japanese incense to the latest perfume technologies, Mitchell will present works exploring poetic links between the eye as a portal to visual experience and the nose to invisible realms. The word ‘iris’ plays a central role through its many meanings as part of the eye, a flowering plant, an optical device in cameras and the Greek goddess personifying rainbows.
