THE WEIGHT OF LIVING

MOTINTERNATIONAL is pleased to present a summer group show of sculptural works. The Weight of Living assembles a dense accumulation of materials - straw, plaster, plexiglass, tufted rug, steel, clay, audio recordings, wax and glaze - within the tight enclosure of a gallery space. The patient labour and shared psychological practices of the selected artists transforms this weight into a series of buoyant, communicative works, that are are in turn humourous, aggressive, blinking, seedy and poetic. Assorted languages and imaginative systems of value build up a social and sexual dynamic. The exhibition points to sculpture's ability to make a claim on the subject, by making use of contingent objects that contain both lightness and an assertive material presence.
Simon Bedwell (b.1963) lives and works in London. Recent solo exhibitions include The Painter of the Hole, MOTINTERNATIONAL, London (2009); Asphalt World, Studio Voltaire, London (2009) and The Furnishers, White Columns, New York (2007). Recent group exhibitions include We Are Grammer, Pratt Manhatten Gallery, New York (2011); Peeping Tom, Kunsthal KaDe, Amersfoort, Netherlands (2011) and So Be It: Interventions in Printed Matter, Roth, New York (2010). In 2011 Bedwell was director of THE HOLE, London which consisted of 5 curated exhibitions and 5 publications printed and organised over 5 weeks. From 1991 until 2003, Bedwell worked as part of the London-based artists group BANK, and continues to manage the BANK archive with Milly Thompson.
Andy Boot (b.1987) is currently studying at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Vienna in the Zobernig master class. Recent exhibitions include Stella di Mare, O’, Milan, Italy (2011); Andy Boot w. Caitlin Keogh, Renwick Gallery at NADA, Miami, US (2011); The Pay Together Thing, Labor, Budapest (2011) and Heterotopias, Musee Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne, Switzerland (2010). In 2011 Boot published a book with Kaleidoscope, with texts by Chris Sharp and Michele d’ Aurizio.
Natalie Czech (b.1976) graduated from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2005 and currently lives and works in Berlin. Recent exhibitions include I have nothing to say. Only to show, Ludlow 38, New York (2012); Et moi aussi je suis peintre oder Why I am not a painter, NKV Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Germany (2012); Reflection and Empathy, Kai 10 / Arthena Foundations, Düsseldorf, Germany (2012); Hidden Poems, Galerie Catherine Bastide, Brussels, Belgium (2011) and A Small Bouquet, Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany (2011).
Renaud Jerez (b.1982) lives and works in Brussels. Recent exhibitions include A Hand on Your Heart, Galerie Vidal Cuglietta, Bruxelles, France (2012), Mécanique Populaire 2011, Galerie chez Valentin, Paris, France (2011); The Best Society, Castillo/Corrales, Paris, France (2011); TIns Blickfeld Gerückt, French Institute, Berlin, Germany (2010) and Géomètres, Pollueurs, Sorciers, Galerie Roger Tator, Lyon, France (2007).
Morag Keil (b.1985) graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2006 and completed her MA at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2009. Exhibitions include Morag Keil, Palais De Tokyo, Paris (2011) as part of the Lafayette Prize; Public Hanging, an off-site project for Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea (2011); Virgina Ham at Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Aachen, Germany (2011); The Smart Frrridge, Kunstverein Medienturm, Graz, Austria (2010) and 21st Century: Manuela Gernedel & Morag Keil, Chisenhale Gallery, London, UK (2010). Keil is currently on residency in Paris at Cité Internationale des Arts.
Rachel Koolen (b.1979) lives and works in Enschede,The Netherlands. Koolen received her M.A. Fine Art at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam in 2011 and was formerly a fellow researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht from 2007 to 2009. Recent exhibitions include Comrades of Time, Project Space Tilburg (2012); Magic Trade Love Objects, Artgenève 2012, Geneva (2012); Life: a users manual, Art Sheffield, Sheffield (2010) and Monumentalism, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2010).
Katrina Palmer (b.1967) lives and works in London. Her book The Dark Object was published by Book Works in 2010. Other work includes: Dubious objects, made-up texts, readings and performances, Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2011); mmmm a CD for Art House Foundation (2011); Relief (A Remote Object of Thought) in the Modern British Sculpture catalogue, Royal Academy, London (2011); Chair-Bed at Again A Time Machine, with Book Works at Motto Berlin (2011) and Volatile Dispersal Festival of Art Writing, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2009).
